APR clinch third place in the 2025 BAL in a record-breaking game

APR secured third place in the 2025 Basketball Africa League (BAL) season by defeating Al Ittihad Alexandria 123-90.

This blowout victory set several BAL records, including most points scored by a team in a single game.

With this loss, Al Ittihad Alexandria finished fourth, marking the second-worst BAL result for an Egyptian team since Al Ahly SC finished eighth in 2024.

Meanwhile, APR achieved the best BAL record for a Rwandan team, surpassing the Patriots Basketball Club, which finished fourth in 2021.

Al Ittihad Alexandria took the court without their primary point guard, Kyle Vinales, who was reportedly injured.

APR, on the other hand, could not count on 2023 BAL MVP Nuni Omot.

Local fans showed up in large numbers, nearly selling out the SunBet Arena and bringing a great atmosphere to the game.

For most fans, it was an unforgettable experience, especially given the game's historic nature.

The historic game set the following BAL records:

74 - Most points scored by a team at halftime. The Rwandan champions led 74–34 at halftime.

123 - APR set a new record for the most points scored in a game, surpassing the previous record set last month during the 2025 Nile Conference when Al Ahli Tripoli beat Nairobi City Thunder 115–87.

38 – APR set a record for the most points scored by a team in an opening quarter.

26 - This is the most three-pointers made by a team in a single game. The previous record of 20 three-pointers by a team was set by Petro de Luanda in a 97-68 win over Patriots on May 30, 2021. Al Ahli Tripoli tied this record in a 115-87 win against City Thunder on May 18, 2025.

16 - The most three-pointers made by a losing team in a game.

10 - Axel Mpoyo surpassed the previous BAL record of nine three-pointers in a game, set by Will Perry, who finished with 41 points in Ferroviario da Beira's 109-97 win over Guinea’s SLAC.

Reacting to his scoring record setting, Axel Mpoyo told the BAL.NBA.COM: “Much respect to Will Perry. I actually watched the game in which he set the BAL record but It feels good to be in this position.”

A disappointed Ahmed Aly insisted that it was a tough game for a team that dominated the 2025 Kalahari Conference with a 5-0 mark.

“I can’t really judge this game. It was just tough to play, period,” said Aly who led Al Ittihad Alexandria with 19 points and seven rebounds.

“We tried our best, but I am sure we can beat APR any day,” he said, adding: “Hopefully, I can hold the record for a while. I know someone will come along and try to break it. For now, it just feels great.”
