DUC confident they can turn their fortunes around ahead of clash with REG

Sahara Conference hosts Dakar Universite Club (DUC) have their backs against the wall in the build-up to their meeting against high-flying Rwanda Energy Group (REG), but the ‘students’ remain upbeat about their Basketball Africa League chances.

DUC are 0-2 while REG are 2-0.

Both teams have faced stiff competition early in the tournament although they face different scenarios for their meeting on Friday.

The teams that finish in the top four places of the Sahara Conference move on to the post-season while the two teams that finish last in the Sahara Conference will see their BAL season come to an end.

If DUC lose to REG they will be in a very difficult position to advance to the playoffs in May in Kigali.

If Kigali-based REG beat DUC they are most likely to advance to the playoffs.

“We have three big finals to play,” said DUC Head Coach Parfait Adjivon.

DUC lost to Ferroviario da Beira by six points (98-92) and by 15 against SLAC (85-70) ahead of the games against REG, US Monastir and AS Salé.

“We have our destiny in our hands and I remain optimistic and I firmly believe in this qualification,” Adjivon said.

He went on saying that these are three must-win games, and he trusts his team.

“There has been a lot of improvement on our game, and start to see some team chemistry. We will do everything to keep our players’ confidence. I remain convinced that the team will grow in strength.”

For REG Head Coach Robert Pack, facing the home teams presents a challenge that his team is prepared to take.

“We are on the road. We know there will be fans cheering on their home team and support them,” the former NBA player said.

Cleveland Thomas Jr. Anthony Walker, Dieudonee Ndizeye, Adonis Filer and Jean Jacques Nshobozwabyosenumukia have crucial for the Rwandan champions, but Pack says his team relies on the collectivism.

“We have to go in there, keep pushing and work on the things that we’ve worked on; stick to our principles and have a chance in the fourth quarter.”

Asked about the team’s morale after two wins in as many games, Pack said: “The guys are feeling good. We also feel like we haven’t played our best basketball. We’ve always felt that as the tournament go on, and we have more time together we can become a better team, and we are taking steps in the right direction. We’re still working, preparing the tough game tomorrow and we’re looking forward to it.”
