APR (RWANDA)
Armée Patriotique Rwandaise (APR) Basketball Club, commonly known as APR, stands as a prominent Rwandan basketball club based in Kigali. Owned and funded by the Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF), the team proudly competes in the Rwanda Basketball League (RBL) and is set to make its mark in the 2024 season of the Basketball Africa League (BAL).
History of the club’s founding
Originating during the RPF’s liberation struggle in 1993, the club was established to serve as a means to engage and occupy soldiers during a ceasefire amid the Arusha peace talks. Alongside the basketball team, the RPF introduced teams in volleyball and football, which continue to operate successfully.
Trophy record
APR boasts an unparalleled local record, having won an impressive 14 national league championships. The team secured its national titles in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, and most recently in 2023.
Furthermore, APR has showcased its prowess on the continental stage, representing Rwanda at the FIBA Africa Clubs Champions Cup three times. In 2007, they achieved a commendable sixth place, followed by an eighth-place finish in 2008, and a remarkable bronze medal in 2009.
Future targets
Beyond their goals on the court, APR works to nurture talents and produce great sportsmen and women for Rwanda. The team has an academy that grooms youngsters at all levels, starting from as young as U-10.
