10 Questions and Answers with David Michineau

David Benoit Michineau made an immediate impact in the 2026 Kalahari Conference, leading Dar City to an impressive 2–0 record.

Michineau, who has played for France and enjoyed some success in European basketball, is experiencing African basketball for the first time.

The 31-year-old point guard averaged 33 points in the first two games, a league high, and is looking forward to making history with the Tanzanian team.

In this Question & Answer interview with BAL.NBA.COM, David Michineau shares his thoughts on Dar City and his experience of the BAL.

Q. For those who know little about your professional background, could you please introduce yourself?

A. I played in Europe, and this is my first time in Africa. I am really excited to be here and looking forward to what lies ahead. I have had a lot of fun so far and I am part of a great group of guys and a great coaching staff. I am just enjoying being here and playing the game I love.

Q. Is this your first time in Africa? Or your first time playing professionally in Africa?

A. Before coming to Pretoria, I was in Tanzania with the team for the training camp.

Q. Having played in some of the top European leagues, such as Turkey and France, as well as the Euroleague, what are your thoughts on the transition to the BAL?

A. Being here in the BAL feels like a natural progression in my career as a professional basketball player. I'm just trying to use everything I've learned over the years, and it's been good because we have a goal as a team.

Q. With two wins from two games in the BAL season so far, what are the limits for this Dar City team?

A. We have no limits as a team. I wish we could win every single game here in Pretoria, and I hope we will. That’s our goal.

Q. You’ve only played two games in the BAL so far. Have you experienced the toughest moment yet?

A. Our last game against the Nairobi City Thunder was tough. It was intense; we played a really tough team. The basketball gods were with us in the end. Playing almost 80 minutes in less than 24 hours has been hard, but enjoyable and fun – I don't even think about the fatigue!

Q. You have played professional basketball for over ten years. What did you know about the Basketball Africa League before you had your own experience of it?

A. I know many players who have played in the BAL. I've heard some positive things about it. I was just excited to be part of it and have some fun. I was in Monaco and wasn't getting much playing time. I wanted to play in the BAL, win games and enjoy myself.

Q. What was your reaction when you received the call to join Dar City?

A. Before joining the Dar City team, I had a dream a few years ago to take a holiday in Zanzibar. It didn’t happen. So, when they called me to tell me that the Dar City training camp was going to be in Zanzibar, I thought: 'This might be a good sign.' I could enjoy the island while playing professionally in Tanzania. I took it as an encouraging sign. I told myself, 'Let me try it.'

Q. What are your plans with the Dar City team? Are you with the team for the duration of the conference, or will you stay if Dar City qualifies for the play-offs?

A. I am committed to the team. If we make it to the playoffs, I will definitely be in Kigali with Dar City. We keep talking about our goals as a team, and once we have achieved our first goal, we will build on it. We want to keep making history with this team. I am excited to be part of this team's history.

Q. What impact could Dar City have on Tanzanian basketball?

A. I have seen videos on social media showing how excited people in Tanzania are and how much they love basketball. We are having a huge impact on the country. I hope we can inspire people, especially young children. It's important to give those kids hope.  We want them to dream of making history for Tanzanian basketball too. Hopefully, they will go on to achieve even greater things than we have.

Q. What are your thoughts on the other five teams playing in the Kalahari Conference?

A. I have watched a couple of games, and there are some good teams here at a high level. There are great players and great coaches who are doing a fantastic job. It’s a great league.
