BAL Champion Dundão leads Angola to the 2025 AfroBasket title

Two years after helping Petro de Luanda win the Basketball Africa League (BAL) title, Childe Dundão played a pivotal role in leading Angola to the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket championship.

The 5-foot-6 point guard erupted with a 16-point performance, steering Angola to a 70-43 win over Mali in the championship game.

As Angola took a double-digit lead late in the third quarter, a significant portion of the 12,700 fans who packed the Kilamba Arena in the Angolan capital city chanted MVP for Dundao continuously.

Childe Dundão was named the 2025 AfroBasket MVP.

Right after the final buzzer, Dudao was voted the 2025 AfroBasket Most Valuable Player.

Dundão, a two-time All-BAL Defensive Player, inspired the Angolans to their first AfroBasket title since 2013. He demonstrated admirable leadership on both ends of the floor, averaging team highs of 15.7 points, 5.8 assists, 2.8 steals, and a 15-efficiency rating.

In his most memorable performance of the tournament, Dundão powered Angola to a 90-80 win over Cape Verde in the quarterfinals while scoring a career-high 30 points.

The 2025 AfroBasket All-Star team consisted of Childe Dundão and Bruno Fernando (Angola), Aliou Diarra and Mahamane Coulibaly (Mali) and Brancou Badio (Senegal).

In addition to winning the 2025 AfroBasket title, Dundão helped Angola win the 2016 FIBA U18 AfroBasket in Kigali, Rwanda.

Dundão was named to the 2025 AfroBasket All-Star Team alongside his countryman, Bruno Fernando, who played in the NBA for five seasons. The All-Tournament team is completed by two other BAL stars, Aliou Diarra and Mahamane Coulibaly, and Senegal’s Brancou Badio.

Aliou Diarra was the leading rebounder in the 2025 tournament.

2024 BAL champions Childe Dundão and Aboubacar Gakou.

Gerson Goncalves ‘Lukeny’ and Aboubacar Gakou, who were part of Petro de Luanda’s 2024 BAL title roster, were also part of the Angolans team that won the 2025 AfroBasket trophy.

This was Dundão’s second appearance in the AfroBasket tournament. He helped his country finish fifth in the 2021 edition.
