Key takeaways from the first day of the 2026 BAL season

From surprising results to stylish introductions, enthusiasm and entertainment, the opening day of the 2026 BAL season was anything but dull.

The sixth edition of the Basketball Africa League began on Friday, 27 March at the iconic SunBet Arena in Pretoria, South Africa, hinting at the fierce competition to come.

In this article, we highlight some of the key moments from the opening day of the 2026 BAL season.

Tigers' statement and surprising win

The seven lead changes in the opening quarter of the game between BAL debutants RSSB Tigers and 2024 runners-up Al Ahly were a clear example of the unpredictability of the season opener.

However, as the game progressed, the prospect of an upset loomed, and by the time the Rwandan side had reached an 18-point lead in the fourth quarter, it was clear that they would be the first giant-killers of the season.

A thorough analysis of the game's stats and details revealed why the Tigers' victory over the Libyan champions would not be the first nor the last of the season.

Al Ahly Libyan's free-throw shooting (16 out of 25) coupled with the RSSB Tigers' 27 second-chance points, and the need for bench players to step up when required, should serve as a wake-up call to coach Ahmed Soliman’s team.

This loss also showed that Al Ahly Ly, a team that entered the 2026 season with an unbeaten record in the Road to BAL qualifiers, needs to improve if they are to live up to their credentials as title contenders.

One thing that must make the Tigers optimistic is the way everyone contributed.

Leonard Randall II and Teafale Lenard Jr were both instrumental for the RSSB Tigers, with the latter scoring more than half of the team's 103 points and finishing with 37 and 27 points respectively.

Although Al Ahly Ly lost their opening game, Donoval Williams' 7-for-9 shooting from behind the arc should keep the Benghazi-based team optimistic.

Wake-up call for the Giants

The Johannesburg Giants should have learned the following lessons from their 30-point defeat (100–70) at the hands of BAL newcomers Dar City: trailing by 36 points at one stage in the game, making only four out of 21 shots from behind the arc, and losing possession 22 times are not good signs. and must be avoided. seriously.

The last time the Giants and Dar City faced off, albeit in different circumstances, the South African champions upset the Tanzanian team 71–69 in Nairobi, Kenya, in November 2025. On Friday, it was a totally different ball game.

Losing by 30 could have serious implications for the race to reach the playoffs, since only four out of six teams from each conference will advance to Kigali.

However, Dar City, who entered the league with a revamped squad, made their intentions clear.

David Michineau was a delight to watch. He made the game look easy with his intelligence and drives to the basket, finishing with the most assists of the day (nine). He finished with 27 points and a team-high efficiency rating of 34.

Michineau’s teammate Nisre Zouzoua demonstrated his scoring prowess, finishing with a game-high 35 points. He was also 8 for 11 from behind the arc. Had he made two more three-pointers, the Ivorian guard would have broken the BAL record for the most three-pointers in a game.

Players to keep an eye on

Although some ended up on the losing side on Friday, players such as Donovan Williams, Damion Baugh, Majok Deng, Jean Jacques Boissy and Joshua Ozabor have shown that they could still have an impact on the 2026 Kalahari Conference.

Fans showed their love for the game.
