Biography 

Johannesburg Giants Basketball Club is a professional basketball club based 

in Sandton, Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, South Africa. The Club was co- founded on 07 May 2025 by Florsheim Ngwenya (Chief Executive Officer & Head Coach) and Lesego Molebatsi (Chief Operating Officer & Chief Financial Officer)

In November 2025Berlina Moroole was appointed as Chairperson, providing governance oversight and strategic leadership as the Club expanded its participation in national and continental competitions. 

The Club was established following the long-standing success of the Johannesburg Basketball Academy NPC, which was founded on 06 July 2016 and serves as the official junior and youth development arm of the organisation. This academy-to- professional model provides a structured player development pathway from junior to senior level and underpins the Club’s long-term sustainability. 

Johannesburg Giants currently operate a Senior Men’s Team, a Senior Women’s Team (launched in January 2026), a Master’s Team, and a junior development programme under Johannesburg Basketball Academy NPC

The Club participates in local leagues and tournaments, including the Inner City Super League (ICSL) and the Johannesburg Basketball League (JBL), as well as regional, national, and continental competitions sanctioned by Basketball South Africa (BSA)

The Club operates under a formal governance and compliance structure, comprising a Board of Directors, executive management, and technical leadership. 

The Club’s practice venue is St Peter’s College, Sunninghill, and 

its administrative offices are based in Sandton at 164 Katherine Street, Barlow Park, Sandton, 2148

Competitive History and Achievements 

Since its formation, Johannesburg Giants Basketball Club has achieved the following: 

  • 2025 South African National Club Champions, finishing the tournament undefeated (7–0) 
  • Victory over KwaZulu-Natal Marlins (79–76) in the national final 
  • 2025 FNL (ICSL) League Champions, securing the title in October 2025 
  • Qualified for the FIBA Road to Basketball Africa League (BAL) 2025 
  • 2025 FIBA Africa Road to BAL – Elite 16 (East Division – Lusaka, Zambia) 
  • Defeated top regional clubs; Bravehearts (Malawi), Baskethounds (Zimbabwe), Dolphins (Botswana), Matero Magic (Zambia) and Ferroviário da Beira (Mozambique) 
  • Qualified for Elite 16 (BAL qualifiers) that was held in Kenya, Nov 2025 
  • 2025 FIBA Africa Road to BAL – Elite 16 (East Division, Nairobi, Kenya) 
  • Clinched BAL Qualification after a decisive victory over Dar City (Tanzania) in the semi-finals 71-69 
  • Qualified for the Basketball Africa League (BAL) 2026 Season, marking the 

Additional Information 

Johannesburg Giants Basketball Club places emphasis on professional governance, player welfare, and sustainable development. All junior and youth development activities are conducted through the Johannesburg Basketball Academy NPC. The Club represents Johannesburg in national and continental competitions.
