Nairobi City Thunder (KENYA)

Founded in 1998 as a corporate team under Kenya’s National Social Security Fund, Nairobi City Thunder is one of Kenya’s established basketball programs. The team won a national championship in 2000, represented Kenya in the Zone 5 Club Championships in 2001, and later competed at the top level of the domestic league across multiple eras, including a conference finals appearance in 2019.

In 2023, the club was acquired by Twende Sports Limited and transitioned into a fully professional structure. Nairobi City Thunder won the 2024 Kenya Men’s Premier League in an undefeated season and became the first Kenyan club to qualify for the Basketball Africa League.

The Thunder made their BAL debut in 2025 and returned for a second consecutive season in 2026. Competing in the Kalahari Conference in Pretoria, Nairobi City Thunder finished fifth, continuing to build experience on the continental stage.
